TOP STORY
1. North Carolina Restricts Transgender College Athletes In Veto Override

by Laura Spitalniak, Higher Ed Dive

“North Carolina’s Legislature on Wednesday overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of a law limiting transgender athletes’ participation in higher education and K-12 sports.

The law prohibits transgender women and girls from competing on academic sports teams that align with their gender identity. The legislation does not address transgender men’s eligibility for men’s teams.

Now, all North Carolina colleges — public and private — must determine a student’s eligibility for athletic participation “based solely on the student’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth,” according to the state’s new law.”

» Court Awareness: “Like those Texas and Alabama, North Carolina now allows students to sue colleges and athletics associations over violations of the law. (They) could run up against the U.S. Education Department’s upcoming Title IX regulatory proposals. Title IX bans sex-based discrimination at federally funded schools.”

» Quotable: “While Governor Cooper has tried to stand between parents and their kids, today the NC House will continue to affirm parent’s rights, protect female athletes, and advocate for the health and safety of our children,” said Tim Moore, the state’s house speaker.

» Of Note: Division III schools affected include Brevard, Greensboro, Guilford, Meredith, Methodist, North Carolina Wesleyan, Pfeiffer, Salem, Warren Wilson, and William Peace.

COACHING
2. All-Time Winningest Volleyball Coaches

Julie Jenkins, Trinity University

Division III has a long history of excellence in the coaching ranks for women’s volleyball.

Trinity (Texas) head coach Julie Jenkins, the active winningest coach in DIII, can become the first mentor all-time to win 1,000 matches in the Division when the Tigers win their 10th match of 2023.

Maryville’s Kandis Schram and Emory’s Jennifer McDowell are two of only five other coaches who have won more than 800 DIII matches with Eastern’s Mark Birtwhistle on the doorstep.

» Did You Know? Juniata won 369 consecutive conference matches from November 8, 1981 through October 14, 2017 - an all-divisions NCAA record. Only one other school has won as many as 200 matches in a row.

FOOTBALL
3. BSC Football Still Open For Business

Anthony Colucci, Birmingham-Southern

by Solomon Crenshaw Jr., Alabama News Center

“Imagine having a college football offseason in which there was a real chance your college might close for good.

Birmingham-Southern (BSC) doesn’t have to imagine. The Panthers lived it.

“In hindsight, it’s hard to put into words, honestly,” new head coach Anthony Colucci said. “The mixture of emotions, thoughts, feelings, questions that took place on any given day were different over a six-month span or so.”

» Background: “The private liberal arts college revealed in 2022 that it could close as early as spring 2023 because of financial and other issues. The college asked the state to provide $30 million as part of a $200 million campaign to save BSC. Ultimately, the Alabama Legislature created a loan system that could help fund BSC and other institutions of higher education.”

» Reality Check: “There is going to be a focus and an element for us with the first game – against McMurry in Little Rock, Arkansas, at War Memorial Stadium. Considering the circumstances of the offseason, it is going to be pretty significant. It’s a Thursday night. It’s one of the first college football games. It’s the first night of Division 3 college football. We’ll be one of the first games played in a pretty surreal moment and environment considering the uncertainty that we went through.”
