👋 Saying Goodbye to Our Summer Schedule. We’re back to our weekday routine beginning Monday with exciting news.

📆 What’s Happening Today. The DIII Membership Committee holds a virtual meeting today.

TOP STORY
1. Presidents Council Recap

The Division III Presidents Council held its summer meeting virtually on August 5, following a meeting of the Management Council on July 22-23.

The councils approved FY25 and FY26 budget enhancements, including $438,500 in new Enrichment Fund initiatives; $2.6 million for championships; and $3.6 million for various supplemental enhancements.

» Championships. “The council approved a waiver of Bylaw 31.3.5.1 (b) that requires geographic proximity (i.e., the competition site is within 500 miles of the institution) to take precedent over seeding when constructing a championship bracket. The waiver allows flexibility for sport committees to ensure that top-seeded teams do not face each other in the early rounds of championships. The waiver applies for up to two years to allow time for the impact of the change to be implemented and assessed.”

» Management Council Appointments. Ryan Erwin, VP for athletics, East Texas Baptist; Heather MacCulloch, AD, Baruch; Kristie Bowers, AD, RPI; Donald Brooks, AD, Macalester; Amanda DeMartino, AD, TCNJ; Myranda Nash, AD, Brevard.

» Presidents Council Appointments. Debbie Cottel, Texas Lutheran; Dale Caldwell, Centenary (N.J.); Julia Jasken, McDaniel; John Walz, Milwaukee School of Engineering

» Date Change. The 2025 NCAA Convention will move to a Tuesday through Friday schedule. This change is for 2025 only.

2. Wartburg’s Grover Named DIII Academic All-American of Year

The Academic All-America® Division III Team Member of the Year honor adds to a crowded trophy case for Owen Grover, who earned the Division III Cliff Harris Award, was named the D3football.com National Defensive Player of the Year and was a finalist for both the Gagliardi Trophy and the National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell Trophy.

He earned a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship maintaining a 3.99 GPA in biology. Grover was a two-time D3football.com Regional Defensive Player of the Year and two-time American Rivers Conference Defensive Most Valuable Player.

The Dyersville, Iowa, native led the Knights to a 13-1 record and the NCAA semifinals for the second-straight season. Grover finished the 2023 season with 113 total tackles (62 solo), 5.0 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks and one interception.

» What They’re Saying. “This rare combination of hard work, attention to detail, and advanced time management skills afforded Owen a well-rounded college experience along with his tremendous success as a student-athlete. He (accomplished so much on the field) while maintaining a 3.99 GPA in biology/pre-med and still being involved in our campus community. He is the most impressive student-athlete I have been around in my 20+ years at Wartburg College and there are no words to express how proud I am to call him a Knight.” - Head Coach Chris Winter

5. The Great Apostrophe Debate

“The formation of the Harris/Walz ticket has touched off an intense national debate over ... punctuation.

  • Specifically, the divisions are about how to use apostrophes when writing about the candidates in the possessive. Is Walz Harris' running mate? Or Harris's running mate? Are we talking about Walz' record as governor? Or Walz's?

📰 AP style is Harris' and Walz's. The NYT, Washington Post and WSJ, on the other hand, do Harris's and Walz's.
